What’s the Difference Between Water-Resistant and Waterproof Flooring?

This is a common question that we get at America’s Best Carpet & Tile. So you’ve heard of waterproof flooring and water-resistant flooring. What’s the difference between the two? Let’s find out.

Time

When it comes to these two, the most significant difference is time. One flooring has a time limit to it before it begins to degrade. The other does not have a time limit.

Water-resistant materials have a window of about 72 hours, within which the spills need to be cleaned up. If cleaned up properly, then the floor will continue to remain functional and look fabulous. These floors are suitable for some home areas, like kitchens, foyers, children's rooms, and living rooms.

On the other hand, waterproof floors are naturally impervious to anything liquid or watery. That adds to your peace of mind. So there is no chance of danger from an impending leak, spill, or accident. Some homeowners use waterproof flooring throughout their entire house to protect it.

Options

You have options for waterproof materials, such as luxury vinyl and tile. You have two cores with luxury vinyl: Wood Plastic Composite and Stone Plastic Composite (WPC and SPC). These core materials will not ripple, warp, or curl when exposed to water, no matter how long it stands. Add to this the material of vinyl, which is also waterproof, and you have a strong deterrent against water damage.

Tile, on the other hand, comes in vitreous and impervious forms. Vitreous means that the tile will soak up some water, and it is not suitable outdoors where it can freeze and crack. Waterproof tile, like porcelain, can go indoors and out due to its complete water resistance. So when you are looking at the tile, ask about impervious tile.
